Leading Indicators

Spring is in the air and the weather is beautiful.  Celebrate by getting out of the office on your lunch break and experiencing some of the beauty in our local galleries. In addition to a host of great restaurants, many of the Off the Grid galleries and studios are open during lunchtime hours. Feed your imagination during lunch as you explore the Downtown art scene!

If you can't make it out on Thursdays, check out the Friday Hemming Plaza Market. Live bands and local food and art vendors bring the plaza to life at lunchtime.  Bring your lunch down to the plaza or order lunch to go and support our local restaurants.

It's the First Wednesday of the month and that means Art Walk! This month's theme is Art on Wheels, a celebration of everything that rolls. Check out the Florida Theatre's Big George Tribute Car Show, the Landing's Adamec Harley bike show, celebrate the grand opening of Burro Bag's new location and Zombie Bike's 2nd Birthday, and see Heather Blanton's work at the Old Library, just to name a few of the amazing things to see this Art Walk!

All American Spring Days

Step through the wardrobe and into the world of Narnia.  The Chronicles of Nanarniarnia: The Exhibition is a magical exhibition based on the blockbuster film series and fictional children's classics by author C.S. Lewis.  Hailed as the near-perfect visitor experience, the exhibit combines original film costumes, set drawings and props from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian with newly created educational interactives, videos and interviews with scientists so that visitors can consider the surprising similarity between our world and that of Narnia.

Music Blooms Downtown

ZZ Top a/k/a "That Little Ol' Band From Texas," is the undisputed longest running major rock band with original musicians intact. ZZ Top's music is always instantly recognizable, eminently powerful, profoundly soulful and 100% Texas American. The band's support for the blues is unwavering both as interpreters of the music and preservers of its legacy.

The Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra's annual Major/Minor Concert is the season finale and crowning achievement of the Publix Super Markets Charities Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra Series, featuring the advanced JSYO ensembles with the musicians of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. The winners of the JSYO Young Artists Competition will also take center stage in solo performances with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. The beginning and intermediate students will perform a Festival of Strings at 6:45 p.m., playing side-by-side with the "big kids" in the JSYO Philharmonic.

Nightlife

Nullspace Gallery is pleased to present a new art installation by artist and Nullspace Gallery co-owner, Kurt Polkey.  "Masculine Pictures" will feature paintings and drawings which tackle questions about gender roles, posture v. authenticity and how the veiwer's preconceived ideas about art, gender, and sex come into play.  Many of the works feature a fictional character named Justin who imbues the paintings with conflict, ambiguity, pathos and humor.  Some of the subject matter is adult themed and may not be suitable for children.
Nullspace Gallery | April 23 - May 7

This year's Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala will benefit the Morning Star School for special needs children and all proceeds will go toward helping to renovate their facilities and make them more accessible for the students.  This year's denim and black-tie clad attendees will enjoy an open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres and dance music provided by a popular local band. Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on many items during the evening's silent auction. Typical items up for bid include sports memorabilia, spa packages, and restaurant gift certificates.

Chew is donating a percentage of their proceeds to fight the growing epidemic of AIDS on the First Coast. The 2010 Dining Out For Life (DOFL) event will benefit Northeast Florida AIDS Network (NFAN), a non-profit organization that serves more than 1,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS. Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner and support this great cause.
