Savannah began celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in 1813 with a private gathering of the Hibernian Society, a group of Irish Protestants. The first parade was five years later. Growing steadily in the 189 years since, Savannah now hosts the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States, attracting over 300,000 visitors from around the world. The Savannah Waterfront Association presents The 2010 St. Patrick’s Festival on Historic River Street March 16-17 along the waterfront, including River Street from East Broad Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Festivities include games, food, beverages, and live entertainment. The event is free, but attendees must purchase a wristband ($5) to consume alcoholic beverages on the plaza and inside River Street businesses Tuesday and Wednesday. Time: February 3, 2010 at 9am to April 20, 2010 at 6pm Location: Orlando City Hall - Mayors Gallery 3rd Floor Organized By: Visual Artist: Everett Spruill Event Description: The Mayors Gallery at Orlando City Hall presents "The Art of Everett Spruill: A Tribute to the African Muse" January 19th 2010 through April 19th 2010. 400 South Orange Avenue Orlando, FL 32801 Viewing Hours: Monday - Friday 8 am - 6 pm EVERETT has developed an esthetic that is a blend of Africa and America. Abstract mixed media compositions inspired by West African masks, sculptures and symbols is one characteristic of Everett's contemporary style. In the "TRIBAL RHYTHMS" series Everett uses Egyptian papyrus, 50 year old African and American postage stamps, African textiles and Icons, shells and found objects to create stunning one of a kind collages. Silk-screened afro-centric patterns, geometric lines and shapes, brush strokes in brilliant color enhance the highly textured surfaces. These image are also enhanced with hand written social commentary to further communicate with the viewer. Everett's works are ethereal, thought provoking and spiritual as they illustrate his Afro-centric visions.
